Healthy Eating for the Holidays

12/17/2016

Here is a short and simple guide to help you eat better this holiday season.  If you follow these simple guidelines, you will feel better in your body, put on less pounds and be less likely to get sick!

Here are my tips:
  • Sip hot water between meals to improve your digestion and immune function.
  • Sit down and enjoy your meal.  Pause and offer gratitude. Savor the flavors.  Enjoy the company.]
  • Pulse between festive meals and simple fare.  After a day of rich celebratory food, dial it back.  Think healthy and simple like green smoothies and soups.
  • Avoid snacking.  Remember what your grandma always said, "Don't spoil your appetite." Save your hunger for mealtimes.
  • Make lunch the main meal of the day whenever possible.  This is when your digestive capacity is at its peak.
  • Eat and earlier lighter dinner whenever possible.  Think 6 pm.  If it can't be earlier, make it lighter.
  • Up your veggies and eat your greens. this is the easiest way to detox daily and keep yourself healthy.
  • Aim for early to bed most nights and allow for at least 13 hours between dinner and breakfast. This optimizes digestion and reduces inflammation.

Do the Holidays Differently this Year!

12/12/2016

When I announced to my husband that I was fully committed to creating a conscious shift in my attitude around the holidays from one of stress and overwhelm to one of ease and taking responsibility for my own experience and self-care, he told me he was so glad to hear this!  Don't get me wrong, I'm not terrible at the holidays, I do love getting together with family and friends, yet I find the season can be very stressful with so many activities, people, places and expectations.

In this blog, I'm sharing with you what I'm doing differently this year and guiding you through an exercise I created for myself called the Holiday Values + Vision Worksheet.  (You can download this and listen to an audio talk about this here.)

Here is a list of the pitfalls I have fallen into during past holidays:
  • Over-scheduling myself and my family
  • Losing myself in the process of meeting others’ expectations
  • Experiencing anxiety, depression or the holiday blues
  • Feeling like the Grinch
  • Over-spending and undersatisfying myself (and others)
  • Eating poorly and regretting it later
  • Getting sick
