About Annie Barrett
MA, E-RYT, NBC-HWC, AP (she/her)
I have worked in the fields of education, yoga, and wellness for over twenty years. My holistic approach to wellness integrates lifestyle medicine coaching and behavioral science with the ancient traditions of Ayurveda and yoga to restore health and wellbeing to individuals, groups and communities.
I'm from Utah where I grew up in a loving family with a grounded home life, positive social interactions, a healthy diet, and lots of outdoor activities in the wild lands of Utah. As a child, I loved school and learning and was very curious about different cultures and perspectives. From an early age, I was spiritually inclined and often pondered deep questions about life and life purpose. At the same time, I often struggled with perfectionism and anxiety which led to stomach aches and insomnia. Nonetheless, I had a deep sense that the world offered experiences and perspectives that would lead me to self-knowledge, satisfaction, and greater wellbeing. At 16, my curiosity to see more of the world led me to Venezuela for a year as an exchange student. There I learned Spanish and fell in love with Latin American culture. My pursuit of diverse perspectives took me to the University of California, San Diego, where I majored in Latin American studies and found my way onto the path of yoga and natural living.
During my college years, I excelled academically, but continued to experience high anxiety and stress. One day, I decided to try a yoga class. While I don't clearly remember what we did in that first yoga class, what I do remember is how I felt at the end of class when we did savasana, guided relaxation. While lying there on my back, I realized I had never felt so at peace in my life. This felt like a homecoming of sorts, and I knew at once that I had discovered a powerful tool for my personal wellbeing and path to self-discovery.
While in college, I worked at the Ché Cafe, a student run, vegetarian restaurant on campus. There, I was steeped in natural food and natural living, and met Steve Scheuerell, who would become my life partner, sharing with me the love of healthy living, travel, and the great outdoors.
I went on to graduate school at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I earned a Master of Arts in Education, and became a bilingual educator. I taught in public schools in California, Oregon and Washington where I was a passionate advocate for underserved students and families. I learned to balanced the stressful demands of teaching by spending my evenings and weekends practicing yoga. Eventually my love of yoga and my desire to learn more about this ancient tradition led me to train as a yoga teacher. After the birth of my first son, I gave up the stress of public school teaching for a period of years to stay at home and devote myself to mothering. I spent the next several years mothering my two sons, teaching yoga part-time and volunteering as a La Leche League leader.
As my sons grew older, my interests in holistic health and wellness prompted me to pursue further training and certification in yoga, meditation, health coaching, Ayurveda, and behavioral science. Over the years, I have taken these knowledge systems and skills and created a unique collection of wellness offerings that include yoga and yoga teacher education, habit change programs, Ayurveda education, wellness retreats, workplace wellness programs, and group and individual coaching. I have been blessed to work with individuals, organizations and workplaces from around the world.
