Taking Care: September Transitions

I don’t know about you, but I always find myself a little surprised when September arrives. How did we get here already?
September is a transition month, an in-between space where summer begins to give way to fall. Depending on where you live, you might already feel a crispness in the air, notice apples ripening, or hear the crinkle of early-fallen leaves. Or it may still be warm, with summer stretching out just a little longer. Either way, this month carries the feeling of change.
After the movement and adventures of summer, September invites us to pause, ground, and steady ourselves. Just as our bones can drop toward the earth with each exhale, we, too, can reconnect with that sense of rootedness. From that grounded place, our spine — like a tree — can rise toward the sky.
This is a natural time to reflect on what summer has been for you:
- The places you traveled.
- The people you spent time with.
- The sweetness and joy you experienced.
Letting yourself register the goodness of summer creates a sense of contentment. That feeling of enoughness brings ease, steadiness, and readiness for what’s ahead.
And as fall approaches, there may also be anticipation — a return to rhythm, ritual, and routine. Our bodies and minds often welcome this shift, especially after the looser flow of summer.
September, then, is a threshold. An opportunity to both savor the lingering sweetness of summer and prepare for the crisp energy of fall.
I invite you to reflect:
- What do you need this month to feel supported as you move through this transition?
- Is there a practice, routine, or ritual that will help you ease into fall?
- What intention can you set — for your body, your mind, your heart — as you move through this in-between time?
When we align ourselves with the rhythms of nature, we nurture our inner well-being. September is a beautiful reminder that change can bring steadiness, sweetness, and renewal when we move with it, not against it.
